Sanibel Island & Captiva Island

OVER VIEW

Let Chris explain where Sanibel and Captiva Islands are in the South West Florida metropolitan area. As you start at the Interstate just South of the Caloosahatchee (pronounced "ka-LOOSE-a-HAT-chee" River bridge (Pineland Road exit), Moving South and West  is Fort Myers, then Fort Myers Beach, then Sanibel / Captiva Islands, then the Gulf water.

Sanibel and Captiva Islands are real islands located on the Gulf coast of Florida, just offshore of Fort Myers. Located within Lee County, they are sandy soil Barrier Islands, different from the more solid coral-rock of Pine Island. For thousands of years, the Islands were home to the Calusa Indians and their ancestors.

The city of Sanibel encompasses the entire Sanibel Island, with most of the city proper at the east end of the island. This is not the case for Captiva Island. Where Sanibel and Captiva meet, there is a small village of Santiva.

Tarpon Bay is on the north side of the islands. Sanibel is linked to the mainland by the Sanibel Causeway, which runs across two small manmade islets and the Intracoastal Waterway. A short bridge links Sanibel Island to Captiva Island over Blind Pass. The Gulf side beaches are excellent on both islands, and are world renowned for their variety of seashells.

The Islands are lovely tropical islands, soft white sand, the expansive beachs, swaying coconut palms, lush tropical foliage and beautiful crystal blue water; world famous for pelicans and herons, pastel colored seashells.

Yet somewhat cosmopolitan, with excellent restaurants, hotels, golfing, tennis, fishing, boating, and shopping venues. Also home to renowned J.N. "Ding Darling" National Wildlife Refuge & Bird Sanctuary and since 1884 Point Ybel Lighthouse to guide seafarers to Sanibel / Captiva Island's shores.
