Audubon Chapters in Southwest Florida Offer field trips and services for the community. They protect plants, animals and their habitats and help manage sanctuary properties. Corkscrew Swamp is managed by the National Audubon Society to maintain native plants and animals found there. Audubon’s Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is voted Florida Best Nature Center. The sanctuary allows the public to see incredibly magnificent natural habitat, with cathedral like old growth cypress forest and abundant wildlife. A 2.25 mile raised boardwalk and numerous trails take visitors through one of the worlds most beautiful 11,000 acre parks. They carry out political campaigns to improve things for wildlife. They urged the Governor to veto the 'Urban Sprawl' bill. He vetoed SB 1712, a huge political victory for them, improving Florida growth management laws and preventing attempts to hand over Florida's remaining rural lands to speculators and urban sprawl. In Southwest Florida they work on =Big Cypress Regional Eco systems provide habitat for keynote species such as the Florida Panther and the Wood Stork =Everglades Lake Okeechobee provide habitat to more plant and animal wildlife species than any other place in Florida. =Gulf Coast Ecosystems and shorebird colonies, with vital nesting and foraging areas.
