This feature dominates all South Florida and it is interesting to see how it effects growth and development here. The CERP (Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan) administered by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, is the most gigantic effort in world history to allow humans to direct the evolutionary growth of an area.
An early area in Naples to see effects of CERP was Southern Golden Gate Estates ( The Picayune Strand Restoration of South west Everglades ) Roads are being removed, buildings bulldozed, exotic species of plants burned to make way for the natural plant life to grow back. (Exotic plant species are harmful)
Water pumped out and the canals being filled in with soil to restore the natural sheet flow of water though the 55,000 acres in northeastern Collier County. Scrap metal and trash left behind by the past residents of Southern Golden Gate Estates lays waiting to be hauled away. A grader works along demolished roads. With this restoration project in progress, workers labor to remove most of the roads, canals and other signs of development. Picayune Strand State Forest (pictured on right) is a beautiful park offering many recreational opportun-ities and is also the home to a large population of precious native birds.
